Irving's letter of 17th offering officers and crew and himself welcome of the Lyceum was forwarded from the ship. He returns there the next day and will at once make Irving's offer known. The demands on his time are too great to permit him to avail himself of the privilege but doubtless there will be many who have more leisure. |

He wired Irving that evening when he received the telegram. He could accept the offer to take Terriss's place from September. He has a tour booked from August to November for himself and his wife in Wilde's 'A Woman of No Importance' but can send someone in his place. Would Irving make engagements for about 4 months from beginning of September, to be renewed if desired, and if he can arrange to postpone or find a substitute in the play he is arranging to produce on his own account the next January or February. He has not absolutely agreed to appear himself, but cannot decided at that distance and needs to discuss matters in England. He is travelling for his wife's health, not pleasure, and returns at the end of July. Would Irving reply as soon as possible as he would have to find a substitute provincial managers will accept. |

Irving's note reads: Yes quite agree - have written. They obviously decided against the engagement; see Letter 5408. |
