He cannot thank them enough for the beautiful picture of their ship, the address, and silver casket they have sent. His kinsmen across the sea have made him so welcome he feels American and Britons are brothers in love as well as blood, and since their seamen who rule the waves which used to separate but now unite them, have made him free of their domain, he feels he is at home in East and West. |

Addressed to the Crew of the USS Chicago, in Bram Stoker's hand, marked 'Copy'. Irving entertained officers and men from the Chicago at the Lyceum, and was in return entertained on board. See Letters 6613-25. "Kinsmen" may also be a reference to the Society of Anglo-American friends. |

Excuse liberty, but he was seaman on USS Chicago at Gravesend and came ashore and overstayed. Officer would not recognise him on return, and a pass to go on board by 11 a.m. did not reach him until 12.30. He is left behind pennyless. Will Irving help him get to Cardiff where he can ship to the US. Fare to Cardiff is 13s - 8d - lend him £ 1. He will wait for answer at box office. |
