| Content Summary: |
Mr Casella will deliver this delayed letter. He does not know any English, being taught only Latin and Greek. He had to wait until Deltel returned to translate the letter as Sardou was in the country. Casella is now taking the reply to Irving himself. He looks forward to their association. He is willing to help in any way over any difficulties which may arise in the translation of 'Madame Sans GĂȘne'. He would like Irving to appear in the 1st Act for a few moments. Napoleon should be the clean shaven artillery officer. He comments on the facial resemblance between Napoleon and Irving and himself. He is sure they will agree. |

A handwritten translation, probably by (Alexander?) Casella, is filed at THM/37/1/37. The rights for 'Madame Sans GĂȘne' were bought by Irving when the play was performed in French in London in 1894, and it was announced for performance after the forthcoming American tour, in July 1895. It opened on 10th April 1897. |

Small point has just occurred to him. Where the Corporal says 'Well growed fightin' men' alluding to the Israelites, how would it be to make him say 'Well growed men - long service fightin' men'. The Veteran would have very decided views about the short service system. |
