Had a touch of gout for 3 days but managed to work and is now all right. Irving must not go there, although he would draw a full house - Salisbury Plain - Toole had good week there the year before but had not been for 10 years and one dose of Toole in 10 years is enough - a poor time. He is now off to Midland Hotel, Bradford. He sends love to Ellen Terry and wishes Irving would engage him to play Lancelot. He may not look the part, but would feel it. He is glad Irving is doing great business in the old theatre. He often thinks of the old times when Irving used to study Hamlet on Calton Hill. With love. |

Ask Gilbert to add Miss ------ after J.L. Toole if possible. A delectable touch of reproach lurks in these words, for their old friend [Toole crossed out] found Irving did not offer Spriggins the support he should have, had he been an actor of a more tragic type. But Toole is large hearted and has recently expressed his regret that he cannot offer his services for the part of Sir Lancelot in 'King Arthur', for whatever one might think of his acting, he would certainly feel the part. |

Hand delivered envelope. This might refer to a dinner Irving was giving. Ellen Terry was ill and did not appear in Edinburgh and this might refer to her understudy. Toole's letter to Irving is Letter 7496, but does not refer to the earlier matter. 'King Arthur' opened in London in January 1895. |
