Date: [1894?], [Dec.?]
Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: As he wrote, before Irving is unable to offer him anything now. A possible engagement in 'King Arthur' depended on his fulfilling his 3 months' engagement, for Irving had never seen him act to judge suitability for a permanent appointment. When he could not carry out his contract and at 48 hours notice Irving had to find a substitute the engagement ended. With no desire to dwell on the circumstances of that collapse Irving thinks he should realise that the £100 he gave him was voluntarily given in sympathy with his miserable condition at the time. Remember that Irving also voluntarily paid expenses for his journey to the Lyceum and he also received £ [ ] for rehearsals preparatory to the autumn tour.

Notes: A draft in Irving's hand. The first page is crossed through, with a replacement text at end: "Never any question between us but of preliminary engagement for 3 months - which you were unable to carry out". The actor is not yet identified. A transcript, probably wrongly ascribed to Bram Stoker is at THM/37/1/35.
