Content Summary: A little final suggestion for amendment to Merlin. If strange writing comes on his borders and breast he will look magical enough. Irving looks glorious, but he is sorry for the spike in his way which he would have put right. If he had seen a proof sheet of the armour he would have explained it to the armourer. It could be fastened down if a nuisance. The rest is a beautiful pageant. He can't bear to have the credit for clothing an army - his sketches and suggestions were hints only, which would have been spoiled by clumsy workmen. He did not design some of the faces under the helmets - the work of an artist with a morbid love of variety - but he was happy and delighted.
Published: L. Irving, p.568.
Notes: Addressed "My beloved Irving" and signed "Your affectionest"; written after the dress rehearsal of 'King Arthur'. With a sketch suggesting means of blunting the spike. Two more of his comic sketches, one illustrating the faces under the helmets, can be found listed under Margaret Mackail, who sent them to Irving. A typewritten transcript is in THM/37/1/50.
