Thanks for that night's hospitality at the Lyceum. He came home convinced that Irving is a great actor but with his pleasure a little spoiled by the news that Ellen Terry is still unwell. |

He had told Webster he would not stand in his way over the transfer in about 3 weeks, but he had thought Hare's play was coming out at Easter and that F[orbes] R[obertson] would play with Irving until 2 or 3 nights before the new production. Perhaps Irving can manage to give him the longest possible time - 3, 4 or 5 weeks. The part is peculiar and he has no time to interview every possible applicant - Haviland would not be suitable. They have both been badly affected by the weather. (Postscript:) He had given him [Webster] permission for rehearsals long before. |

Ben Webster who was appearing in 'The Case of Rebellious Susan' was due to take over Johnston Forbes Robertson's part of Lancelot in 'King Arthur' at the Lyceum when the latter left the company to appear in 'The Notorious Mrs Ebbsmith' under John Hare's management. This opened on 13th March. |
