Date: 1877, Oct., 25
Document Type: Letter (9 p.)
Content Summary: She discusses his interpretation of Louis (XI). His "amusement" is calumny disguised as critique and will make his friends more devoted. She sends him 'The Theatre'. She is glad he found a friendly greeting at the Russells. She remembers the little manager and some bigger man at the queerish Little Theatre [Dundee], and cannot easily imagine Irving on that stage and hopes "The Boys" may not be there. She is glad he likes the portraits? for Louis. She is doing something for Trin which will come with grapes. The beauty bird will swing in the middle window of the gallery. Mr Lacy comes that night with 'The School for Scandal'. (Postscript:) They remember Mr & Mrs Howard, manager at Edinburgh.... She sends a queer letter.
Published: -
Notes: Dictated to Baroness Burdett-Coutts. The "amusement" is probably 'The Fashionable Tragedian' and the Boys are a rowdy clique in the audience. The bird is a gift from Irving mentioned in Letter 608.

Document Type: Letter (1+10 p.)
Content Summary: Mrs Brown sends thanks in her own hand. Is Dublin nearer than Dundee? She discusses press reviews of 'Hamlet'. The Scots shame London. She complains of the extortionate Mr McClean. The Dundee Boys will have a treat on Saturday. She discusses 'The School for Scandal' read by Mr Lacy the previous night and says she prefers Shakespeare to plays reflecting modern life. The Baroness is well and went to see some diamond cutting: she talked of the characters there and said she and Mr St John thought the Master was very like Toole in 'Dot'....

Notes: One page written by Hanah Brown on a sheet folded over the 3-10p. dictation to Baroness Burdett-Coutts. McClean was a hotel manager who had overcharged Mrs Brown for a breakage.

Content Summary: They have not heard from Dundee and hope to get an account of Richard. Friends send him a hearty greeting to Edinburgh: how pleasant is was at that time the last year. She quotes Goldsmith and Keats. Is it true that Charles is given up to the provinces and to Brooke(?), and is Lear to appear at the Lyceum the next season? She refers to the reviews of 'Hamlet' from Dundee read to them by Mr Clough. The telegram has just arrived. She is glad there was a strong house that night to counter the Boys. The next reading includes Moore's Paradise and the Peri. Irving might think of something better. They think of his arrival in Edinburgh.

Content Summary: How is he? Advt for pamphlet is only in "Scotsman". The man is stupid - he wanted it in every paper for a fortnight at least.
Published: -
Notes: This must refer to the pamphlet 'Concerning Mr. Henry Irving addressed to E.R.H.' by Yorick, which was at least partly written by Irving himself, in reply to the attack on him in 'The Fashionable Tragedian'. Both works were published in Edinburgh in 1877 and Hannah Brown received copies on 4th November.
