Content Summary: He went to Southampton that day to meet his sister en route from New York to Germany so missed the arrival of the message. He is delighted to accept Irving's offer for a work written for him alone, which he should try in America, providing a second £50 to cancel all his debts. He wrote because his landlord is threatening, and assigns all rights. Send an open cheque as he has no bank account. His daughter Lilian thanks Irving, and says he will be lovely in the part.

Notes: Mortimer was in financial difficulties and Irving's purchase of the play 'Father Gabriel' is an act of charity. The play is not listed by Nicoll. Also preserved is an agreement giving £50 for rights in the play, dated 10th July.
