He sends birthday greetings with flowers not inappropriate to one who combines the strength of a man and the tenderness of a woman. He regrets that their lives have not brought them closer together to an intimacy that his admiration for Irving would wish for. It is now too late in both their lives but he expresses his esteem. |

Greetings and congratulations. Would Irving like him to rejoin him once more at the end of his contract? His present engagement ends about July 1897 and by the time Irving returns to England he will have a year to serve. He has many schemes but wants to know if Irving is likely to have him again? He offers three years from 1897 at his present salary if he could be advertised above the rank and file. This shows the kindly feeling he feels for Irving - let him know - it does not matter which. His love to Nell [Ellen] Terry. They are doing well there. |

Stoker had written to him correcting an article suggesting that Baroness Burdett Coutts had backed Irving's productions financially. Reports progress of his play 'Machiavelli', not just aimed at a singular personality like Irving's, but as he is chief, he must have first refusal. They have had Bernhardt & Duse at the theatre - colossal women and great artists. He spent a pleasant Sunday afternoon with Sarah who was complimentary about Miss Terry. Has watched 'royal' progress with great interest. Dramatic season has had many failures including [Henry Arthur] Jones and Pinero in new style dramas. Why are they concocting nightmares? Discusses performances of John Hare who is persistent, and 'The Shop Girl', 'The Artist's Model' & 'His Excellency'. People are trying to get him back to newspaper work. He looks forward to seeing the company and sends regards to Irving, Ellen Terry and Loveday. |

She has just received his letter of 13th February. She had noticed the paragraph about 'Sans GĂȘne' and, after thought, her only solution is that Geo. Edwardes approached Mr Daly with an offer that in return for the American rights in 'The Circus Girl' (which Daly controls through a German contract) Edwardes would allow Daly American rights of 'Sans GĂȘne' the opera, which Edwardes intended to produce in London. She and Mr Pitou are working to protect the property just as [Irving & Stoker] worked to protect it in England. What a crime that people like Edwardes can give them so much trouble. (Postscript:) GIve her best wishes to Sir Henry & Miss Terry. |

Typewritten. Irving contemplated a lawsuit against Edwardes who did not produce 'The Duchess of Dantzig' until 1903. |
