Author: Reade, Charles >>
Address: 148, Kings Road, Brighton
Recipient: Irving, Sir Henry >>
Address: -
Date: [1878?], [June?], [10?] Monday
Document Type: Letter (3 p.)
Content Summary: Before leaving town he heard from Mr Hodgson he is holding £42 for country performances of 'The Lyons Mail'. If Irving played 42 times that is alright but Reade thinks he probably played 21 times and this is £2 a night as at the Lyceum. Reade would only have asked £1 in the provinces. Therefore he proposes £1 a night in the country and daylight performances at the Lyceum if played again that day. Reade would be glad to receive a cheque for various items from the next Treasury. 'The Bells' was a treat.

Notes: It is not yet clear how often 'The Lyons Mail' was played in 1878 and 1879. Mrs Bateman paid £30 for country performances in December, presumably before she gave up the management in August 1878, and Irving's payment may merely be for the latter part of that season. See Letters 4602-03.

Date: 1878, June, 19
Document Type: Letter (3 p.)
Content Summary: As Irving kindly communicated her desire to possess the picture of Dawn by Mr [Francis] Lawson could she ask him to find out where the cheque should be made payable, and also whether Mr Lawson would like it to remain on view at the British Gallery or elsewhere. It would be no inconvenience to her as she could not at present hang it with the repairs which are going on in her house.

Author: Martin, Helena (Helena Faucit) >>
Address: 31 Onslow Square, SW
Recipient: Irving, Sir Henry >>
Address: -
Date: 1878, June, 19
Document Type: Letter (8 p.)
Content Summary: She sends a promised cabinet photograph of herself from Mayall. She discusses 'Vanderdecken' at some length. Wills has not shown his usual skill in character development and Irving has a thankless task. Whilst praising some details she thinks the play wearisome. Could he wind up the season in a more lively manner? Could they play Benedick and Beatrice together? If Mrs Bateman would give the theatre one evening for the benefit of the G[enera]l T[heatrica]l Fund she would act and repeat the play for Mrs Bateman's benefit. She expects the arrangements are made in which case she trusts Irving will not repeat her remarks. They go to Wales in early July.

Notes: Irving probably replied that he was not ready for Benedick, as she mentions this in a letter from 15th May, [1879?]
