Content Summary: Welch, who had tried to swindle Irving and Mr [Charles?] Sugden, pleads with Irving not to prosecute him. He is not yet a convict and this was his one lapse for which he has no defence. He does not wish to tell his father and friends, who could help him, of his disgrace. It was the temptation of temporary want. He wishes Mr Sugden and Edmund Yates could read his letter. He thanks God the swindle did not succeed.

Notes: On the bluish paper also used by Ellen Terry and therefore possibly of later date and probably after Irving became manager of the Lyceum. The actress Ada Cavendish went on tour to America in August 1878, but also toured in Britain in later years. She had acted with Irving in 1870 and in 1885 married his friend Frank Marshall.
