Address: -
Date: 1878, Dec., 31
Document Type: Letter
Content Summary: He sends congratulations on the previous night's triumph. He was one of many friends, and was almost deafened by a man shouting in the pit. He has never seen such "first night" enthusiasm anywhere before. Don't let management worry him, but take things easily. It is trying and can be painful to a sensitive man as so many people think kindness means "kootooing" [kowtowing]... Irving has a clear field and much favour and must succeed as all his friends wish. No need to answer.
Published: L. Irving, p.318-19 .
Notes: On the first night of 'Hamlet', 30th December at the beginning of Irving's management of the Lyceum. Byron had managed the Alexandra Theatre, Liverpool, 1867-74 and subsequently the Criterion in London.
