Before long she will accept Irving's offer. But she is not so anxious to see this play as his other productions. She has only seen it once and it did not leave a happy remembrance. She discusses the weaknesses of the play and the performances it requires. Bulwer intended the Lady to give the keynotes and she and Claude should work together. She thinks some of the critics misjudge "natural acting" which can mean different things. She hopes Irving is not working too hard. Nothing can compensate for broken health. |

On Thursday she will again be sitting under the guardian yew hedge. It was good that Irving had everything done so perfectly for his play. Having Cowley and Keats by heart she hopes to see a little of what has passed through Irving's mind, even to the banks of Portia's healing flowers. Words are inadequate to express the joy Irving's kindness has given her. She is grateful and will not forget. (Postscript:) That night she is going to hear Patti as Lucia - but how flat the opera beside a fine play. |

Miss Erskine is obliged for the Box - the Baroness does not much admire the affair. Could Irving come the next evening? Countess Rothes and Mr Leslie would like to meet him as they go with her to the Lyceum. (Postscript) She fancied the previous night that a better effect could be had in the scene where Claude Melnotte cloaks the Lady for the walk to his mother's cottage, if it was put on at once. She does not think it would interfere with the feeling, and as it is usually done is rather a bundle. |
