Irving's reason for withdrawing must be a just one. Therefore he will follow his example and he will subscribe £10 and send Irving the cheque. He wondered why Mr Everett made the application. It appears to be a 'Truth'ful two'[?] Will Irving come when he can; the sooner the better. All there will rejoice to see him. P.S. When is Irving's benefit? Let him know in good time. |

'Truth' was a magazine - probably satirical. This refers to Henry Marston's benefit held at the Lyceum on 29th May. See Letter 6845. |

He thanks Irving for his note. His father has decided not to publish the play until he has talked more with Irving. Perhaps this could be at Haslemere where they expect to be the next month and hope to persuade Irving to visit them on a fine Sunday. His father feels so many alterations are necessary to fit 'Becket' for the stage he would rather not publish it first and would rather that the alterations be made for Irving and under his guidance rather than that of another. |

She has heard of the disastrous finances of the General Theatrical Fund. She wrote to the Committee offering her services for a benefit. The Committee has written that they will consider the offer immediately. Can Irving advise or act, and meet the Committee the next Saturday between 2 and 3? Which theatre should she perform in? She knows that Irving is not ready on Benedick - what about Jacques - not fatiguing - has Irving studied the humorous melancholy gentleman? |

Jacques in 'As You Like It'. The Fund declined her offer; see her letter of 25th June. |
