A stranger but offers congratulations on 100th night of 'The Merchant of Venice'. He was in town for the 2nd performance and waited at the pit door for 2 hours in a terrible crush with his Shakespeare in his hand. He was in second row and has never been so rewarded. The Lyceum is the only theatre he has been to since ordination, and he saw 'The Bells' and 'Hamlet'. Irving has shaped his life. He recalls an eulogy by Bishop Lightfoot of Durham that whoever encourages what is fine and healthy is the benefactor of his country and the most effective preacher of Christ. He believes Irving has fulfilled that task. |

| Content Summary: |
He had hoped that Irving's delay in answering his request on Ruskin's behalf was because he had written to him direct. Ruskin is in poor health and Laister would have preferred a simple yes or no. Ruskin merely wanted his whole letter printed. He did not dispute the 'Theatre' paragraph but felt Irving must be responsible for it in one way or another. He feels the letter should be published in a forthcoming number of the magazine. |

| Notes: |
Laister then wrote to Clement Scott the editor of 'Theatre' and this correspondence is preserved in the same file. Scott later printed a revised version of Ruskin's letter. |

Would Sunday do to have a go at Vanderdecken? He would like to exhibit it that year if Irving has no objection. He could manage another day if necessary but they are trying to move to "the new den" soon. The supper was a splendid success. He liked the way Irving shut up the old impostor. |
