He is happy to think of her; her friendship is a blessing. The compass is beautiful, like her taste and will lead him to her. He is very weary with rehearsing by day and acting by night but soon has three weeks' rest. Is it true that she has had a little visitor - a friend of Irving, to see her. She never said. He hopes she liked him - advise him. |

With envelope; transcript in THM/37/1/14. It is possible the visitor might have been the young H.B. Irving; equally it might be J.L. Toole. |

Irving's handsome ring arrived that morning and he is delighted and proud as a peacock. He looked at it all through breakfast and the waiter must think he is rehearsing "Lissander" in 'The Wonder'. He will wear the ring as long as he lives. Will Irving send papers to Wallacks in New York until the end of September and they will be forwarded from there. He will be anxious to hear about 'Hamlet' which must be a "big go" for Irving. (Postcript:) Give his regards to all the Bateman family. He finishes there Wed. night & sails Thursday morning. |

Lady Sutherland asks for the name of the lovely air which is played in all the sad scenes of 'Charles I'. It runs in the ears and she longs to listen again. Praise for wonderful acting; counting days to seeing 'Hamlet'. Asks what Irving's dress will be. Black velvet? Hopes nothing too wide and flowing. She likes short cloaks rather than long ; excuse her impertinence. Only worry is that such intense acting will make Irving ill. |

The music seems to have been 'Golden Slumbers'; see Letter 4316. Irving's first Lyceum Hamlet was on 31st October 1874. |
