Glad to note the general tone of the press the day before though Yates believes far more in the efficacy of what is said in society than what is published in newspapers. He will get 'The World' this evening and Yates has written fully to the 'New York Herald' on the subject. |

Yates edited 'The World'. 'Hamlet' opened 31/10/1874. |

He expands on his opinion of Irving's Hamlet. It was the first time he had seen a Shakespearean part with the illusion complete from beginning to end. He could not forget Fechter was Fechter. He praises Irving's consistency and delicacy in a number of scenes. He was annoyed to hear that the 'Figaro' has stated Wills was to write the next play for Bateman. He never joins the Arundel [Club] gatherings or deals with the press but lives in his studio. Tell Bateman he has nothing to do with this or any future rumours, and answers to papers make things worse. With all admiration. |

Great praise for the last night - she saw Hamlet not Mr Irving. She has no time to get a line in a weekly paper but will write in the 'Victoria' in December.
Did Irving mean to make a repetition in a line in the advice to the Players? If not, she admired his complete self-possession in overcoming the slip. |

She discusses Irving's interpretation and business as Hamlet, and a line of Miss Pauncefort's. Why couldn't Irving come with them to Sunday church and cold dinner? She returns her precious little book for Irving to dedicate to her. It is full of common sense of which [Hamilton Aidé] says she is devoid. She has heard from Hallam that Mr Tennyson is better and hopes Irving has written to him. She has thought about their conversation. It is a relief to Irving to talk privately and she likes to listen. (Postscript) She has set her head on fire again but was not hurt. |

Addressed to "Dear Hamlet", and probably written soon after the first performance on 31st October. Mrs Greville was a close friend of the Tennyson family, and also of George Eliot. Georgiana Pauncefort played Gertrude to Irving's Hamlet in both 1874 and 1878. |

Congratulations on Hamlet. He wanted to be present but could not and will see it in a week or two. He hopes Irving can come to tell him about it and how the "new business" took. He sends regards to the Batemans, and criticisms from the 'Times', 'Telegraph', 'Post' and 'Observer'. |
