Macbeth was impressive and subtle, and although a villain Sant was with him to the end. The costume in the banqueting scene was very paintable and he wished he had brushes with him. He queries one textual point and says he now knows the play better than he ever did.

Salvini appeared in London in 1875, and Irving first played Macbeth in September that year. She is presumably not the noble English lady recommended in Letter 3693.

Content Summary: 'The Times' that morning says he should lose no time if he wants to see 'Macbeth', and since he has been ill since he saw 'Hamlet' he will be better able mentally to compare Thane and Dane. He asks for a Box for Thursday before he is buried in the awful Amateur business with rehearsal problems, and after Thursday he is at The Old Ship at Brighton. If Irving can leave a card for him (any part of the house) at the Club. He thinks Mrs Vere will be a success if her domestic grief does not sadden her spirit, but Irving will make allowance for her and Miss Nevil, both maiden efforts.
