Address: -
Date: [1876], Jan., 20 Thursday
Document Type: Letter (3 p.)
Content Summary: He thanks Irving for a great treat. He would like some things altered but parts were perfection. He admires the last act although it is not his interpretation. He asks Irving to reconsider certain aspects of the Ophelia scene. Continuous performances of the same part inspire art but performances interrupted and varied by others mature art. He suggests Irving plays 4 or 5 Shakespeare characters throughout a year when he could attain a degree of excellence as great as any of his predecessors. Teddy wants to see Irving.

Notes: 'Hamlet' was revived between 'Macbeth' and 'Othello'. Teddy was Marshall's son.

Recipient: Irving, Sir Henry >>
Address: -
Date: [1876?]
Document Type: Letter (2 p.)
Content Summary: She only makes one observation - for the death scene to be in darkness. Salvini was magnificent in the Southern manner, but there is something English about Othello. Both the Wigans are there and she is going to fetch the Duchess of S[utherland]. She will not trouble Irving about the Lane Show. She will be able to get it straight from Mr Wills.

Notes: The letter seems to be written before the first night of 'Othello' on 14th February 1876. This may be too early for the Drury Lane performance to be 'The School for Scandal' for J.B. Buckstone on 8th June.
