He will be delighted if she comes on Tuesday at one o'clock. He is very well but has not the meaning of the 'pair of friends'. Do explain what she means. He is improving very much in 'Othello' thanks to her [and hardly any other like you?] |

Her letter must be kindly intended and he thanks her. She always has his kindest wishes and he will help her if he can, but they will always keep the path they have chosen. He wrote this some time ago and now is compelled to repeat it. He will do anything to add to her comfort, and whenever she asks him to provide for the children's education he is ready and anxious to do so. He has no notion of leaving England. His engagements there are complete for the next two years and will be carried out if nothing unforeseen occurs. Goodbye and may God keep her. |

| Content Summary: |
Can they have a box for Tuesday evening? She encloses a photograph by Lombardo of F.W. Burton's portrait of her as Antigone. She only sat for the head, not the grand pose. Burton has succeeded Sir William Boxall as director of the National Gallery. This picture was painted in Dublin some years previously. She hopes he is not finding the "noble moor" too exhausting. She thinks her spirit would have tired of the strain even before her body. It is hard that an actor's art has to yield to the demands of scenery and machinery. She wishes the audience told to use its imagination as Shakespeare expected in actor and audience. They aim at everything and sacrifice essentials. |
