Content Summary: He will see and had intended to see her the next day - not about the ring which he had not thought she was serious about. It was foolish of him to lend it, but he only lent it to gratify a whim and only the poor girl's vanity prompted her to wear it. He is sorry Mrs James should have been so distressed and hopes she will not again credit him with such ingratitude.

Notes: With envelope postmarked MR 22 76. Typewritten transcript in THM/37/1/16. Irving had lent the ring which Mrs James had given him to Isabel Bateman, who presumably wore it on stage.

Content Summary: He sees how hurt she is about the ring and is truly sorry. Would she rather he returned it? He lent it to Isabel Bateman with no thought of a slight to Mrs James. Her whim was simply the vanity of most women to wear so pretty a thing. He strives to be honest and straightforward in his doings and the ring will lose its value if he is not sure he keeps it ungrudgingly. He never sees his children and may not for some years. If they came to him he would have liked her to see them but they never do. He heard of the Era's attack and guessed why she did not send it.
