Author: Martin, Helena (Helena Faucit) >>
Address: 31 Onslow Square SW
Recipient: Irving, Sir Henry >>
Address: -
Date: 1876, May, 22
Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: Irving's suggestion of 'The Lady of Lyons' for his benefit takes her breath away. 24th June is convenient. As for the Lady - she is unused to the heat - and has no appropriate dress, which would be costly. Could Irving do portions of 'Hamlet' after 'King René's Daughter'? Will he call to talk it over?
Published: -
Notes: The date was later changed to 23rd June.

Author: Irving, Sir Henry >>
Address: 15A, Grafton Street, Bond Street, W.
Recipient: Marsh >>
Address: [London?]
Date: 1876, May, 27
Document Type: Letter (2 p.)
Content Summary: Could a patient named Greenfield in the Hospital for Hip disease be kept in, though the time has nearly expired. They would be doing a great kindness to deserving people. He would be grateful for a reply.
Published: -
Notes: It would be tempting to identify the correspondent with Frederick Howard Marsh, 1839-1915, of St Bartholomew's Hospital, but there were three orthopaedic hospitals. Irving gave a reading in aid of the London Hospital at the Crystal Palace in early July 1876. Greenfield is not yet identified.

Document Type: Letter (8 p.)
Content Summary: She gives her reasons for refusing to act as Pauline in 'The Lady of Lyons' for Irving's benefit. She pleads business, ill-health and nervousness in acting. She suggests Iolanthe as a part for the autumn for the General Theatrical Fund benefit. She asks Irving to call on Monday at 3pm. For 24th [June] she could read briefly, leaving Irving the whole evening to himself, but he must play Sir Tristram.

Notes: Iolanthe and Tristram are characters in 'King René's Daughter' finally performed for Irving's benefit on 23rd June. The title was later changed to 'Iolanthe'.

Date: [1876], May, 30
Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: She missed seeing Irving the day before although waiting until 3.30. Consider 'King René's Daughter' fixed for 24th June. Irving is not to announce her name until after Buckstone's benefit as she cannot act for him. Will Irving send a sketch of what he intends to say in his announcement. She will send promptbook, etc. Will Irving increase his prices? It is generally done for the Theatrical Fund but this is a different kind of charity. There are many things she would like to talk about.

Notes: J.B.Buckstone's benefit was on 8th June, and Irving's finally on 23rd June.

Content Summary: She sends Irving the promptbook for 'King René's Daughter' as it was sent back from the Haymarket the previous December. It is very untidy, but she has found a clean copy so that Irving can study Sir Tristram. A slight sketch was sent to Mr O'Connor of the Haymarket, but he has not returned it. She has the music but that will do later. She sends a copy of her husband's 'Madonna Pia', which she had thought of acting; but running nightly is impossible. She thinks it a savage custom and destructive of the art of acting. The character of the sensitive jealous husband would suit Irving admirably. The play is only printed for private circulation. They start for Wales the next morning.
Published: -
Notes: The play, to be performed at Irving's benefit on 23rd June, was also by her husband Theodore Martin.
