Content Summary: ... succeed in keeping himself afloat. He hopes he will live to pay Irving the interest he owes in money if not in friendship. He will gladly do anything Irving wants done. He has a scheme which might pay Irving back and give him money. If Irving would tour again he could manage it and he could come to England at the same time not necessaily to the Lyceum. Experience has taught him he should only do 'Beau Brummel' - 'Chicot' and another comedy. What does Irving say? He thinks it would be a sucess. Tell no one. It is bold and original and in many ways desirable.
Published: -
Notes: This is probably the second part of Letter 2749. Irving obviously showed it to Ellen Terry who has added a pencil note at end: "He is a very impudent fellow". With typewritten transcript. It is referred to in Letter 2244.

Author: Tree, Sir Herbert Beerbohm >>
Address: Theatre Royal, Haymarket
Recipient: Irving, Sir Henry >>
Address: -
Date: [1889?], Dec., 12
Document Type: Letter (2 p.)
Content Summary: Joe [Comyns] Carr tells him that Irving has been seedy, but he hopes he will be able to come on Monday and writes to tell him that it will be a small affair & no speeches so Irving won't be "harried". (Postscript:) He saw 'Nero' the day before - it is indeed a most remarkable display.
Published: -
Notes: This seems to refer to the invitation in Letter 2949. Lady Tree states that Irving did speak, mentioning Tree's father. 'Nero' does not seem to be a play at this date, although several books on Nero were published in 1890. Tree staged Stephen Phillips' 'Nero' in 1906.

Address: Union Club, Brighton
Recipient: Irving, Sir Henry >>
Address: -
Date: [1889?], Dec., 24
Document Type: Letter (3 p.)
Content Summary: Sends [Richard] Mansfield's letter. His statement of his affairs is correct; he has been playing a losing game since he commenced to star. As for his proposal to manage Irving, it would be good for him but Pigott does not see where Irving would come in. It is an impudent suggestion trying to follow North & Barnett's example. Thanks for the invitation for 5th which he accepts. Compliments of the season.

Notes: For further reference to the Mansfield controversy see L.Irving, pp 507-510. Mansfield's letter is not attached, but is probably that of 12th December, Letter 2749 & 2751. A visiting card also enclosed - Mrs Smyth Pigott (with Mr. added in ink); the Misses Smyth Pigott, 14, Montagu Place, Bryanston Square, W "with congratulations" which may be of later date, on Irving's knighthood.
