| Content Summary: |
She adds a bulletin to Mrs Brown's letter, which was really written and not wholly guesswork, as the flowers Irving sent were the first things she made out clearly and the letter is the first effort at seeing again. Their confidential amanuensis Miss Peri writes all Mrs Brown's letters and signs herself, so please do not mention a real letter. This success pleases the Baroness, also Irving has given them so much pleasure since he was there... (Postscript) She hopes to read Irving's Hamlet & Ophelia note to Mrs Brown but she cannot hear... much... |

Mrs Brown asks her to thank Irving for his letter. She says "John will have a [ ? ] of 20 verses long"... It is kind of him to think of reading but his holiday rest must not be interfered with. She remarks about some incident with Trin (Irving's dog). (Postscript) She has the clever sketches safe but she does not know Tenbury(?). |

He has seen Mr Irving who refuses to increase allowance to Mrs Irving by £100. He will undertake the premium on his Life Policy and he will pay for a governess to be engaged quarterly but if she is non-resident the sum of £60 pa would not be acceptable rate for the tuition of two little boys for a few hours a day. Irving will send a cheque for the lady's salary every 3 months to pay for books, drawing material etc. As to his childrens' visits to him he wishes to act as considerately as possible to Mrs Irving but she must not treat them as a concession and surround them with difficulties. |

Warm thanks for the present of "The George" - a relic of the marvel Edmund Kean - a gift beyond value. |

| Notes: |
Brereton does not name the donor of the George, who is addressed as Dr Lawson and may not be William Lawson. The George was part of the collar of the Order of the Garter with image of St George, worn by Kean as Richard III. Irving had great success as Richard and at this time also received Kean's sword and Garrick's ring. |
