He was never more sorely tempted than by Irving's telegram but has put the wicked impulses behind him and written to Swinburne. He will not say whether he hopes Swinburne will refuse. |

| Notes: |
Irving clearly asked and preferred Gosse, but Gosse thought Swinburne should write the verses for the unveiling of the monument to Christopher Marlowe at Canterbury. |

As they say they can get things aged, ask for it at home or abroad - at home Collinson & Lock have already been experimenting and have succeeded in reproducing the difficult colour. Would it not be better to communicate personally with C & L (by Lock) to obtain material which could then be sent to Rome and made up. He proposes this, assumimg there is no special benefit to them in trying to reproduce the colour, their special interest being the making up of the clothes. |

| Notes: |
A draft with passage crossed through, unclearly dated by Stoker, with note "To Burns & Oates", and probably referring to the costume for Wolsey in 'King Henry VIII'. Collinson & Lock were principally cabinet makers, but clearly also dealt in silks (see Letter 5027). Brereton gives a similar account of trouble taken over Wolsey's costume, at great expense. The play was produced on 5th January 1892. See also Letter 8804. |

Gauzes are the things for visions - if 2 not enough 3, 4, or 5. With pieces to put over each figure like bridal veil. Tell Mrs Reid to get enough. |

| Notes: |
Typewritten transcript. This probably refers to 'King Henry VIII' and Queen Katharine's vision, but might possible refer to 'Macbeth' or to the mermaids planned for 'King Arthur' which are described with their faces covered in gauze, but which were cut at the dress rehearsal. Mrs Reid was the Lyceum wardrobe mistress. |

An engagement in the West will prevent him hearing Irving's address on Monday. He recalls with pleasure Baroness Burdett Coutts' first introducing him to Irving's classical style of acting, and he has never changed his opinion that no man has done more to make the stage the most effective enforcement of the Ethics of the pulpit and university education. The drama teaches history by reproduction. |

He refers to Irving's address to the Edinburgh Philosophical Institution on 9th November on 'The Art of Acting'. Endorsed by Irving: Answered 9.11.91. |
