Content Summary: They are to meet at Baroness Burdett Coutts' on Monday at 4pm. She is bringing Miss Stokes whose playing is charming and delicate ... Mrs Brown's suggestions as to the quantity of the (acts read?) will tire her friends, but they must try on Monday - she will be open to reason. Miss Stokes would like to take her sister Mrs Griffiths and her 2 children to 'Louis XI'. Will this trouble Irving or should she ask Mrs Bateman? She hopes Irving has recovered from his cold. She saw 2 performances at the Gaiety which she deplores. Are they to build a Shakespearean theatre for such representations?

Content Summary: He saw 'Louis XI' for the second time recently. Irving's acting is perfect in creating a dramatist's historical personage - before there was always something of himself but now he goes out of himself. The play has not taken because it is one of the worst and most undramatic ever written. No actor can change a bad play and a bad company. Irving's is the best piece of acting he ever saw in France, England or Germany. (Postscript) He has heard Irving is to do Caleb Williams - a dismal though effective subject, but it will be no good without a good dramatist. There must be a good role for a woman. This is one of the many faults of 'Louis XI'.
Published: L. Irving, p.302 (in part).
Notes: 'The Iron Chest' produced in September 1879 was based on Godwin's novel 'Caleb Williams'.
