Porter is preparing an article on 'Proofreading ' for Century Magazine. He wants to reproduce handwriting of notabilities and has listed eight. Would Irving lend page of Ms writing, with a fair proportion of corrections if Irving is in the habit of sending corrected proofs to printers? He would like details of title, date etc. Ms can be returned after it is lithographed. Porter has long been an admirer and when last in England visited Irving's birthplace when he was staying in Bridgewater. He asks for an early reply. |

Having good time with bride and groom. Thinks he is leaving the next Monday for North Berwick, and will inform. Cannot understand what the Lewis's mean by question of copyright being practically decided. Why didn't they say so before? Surely there is as much copyright in certain titles as others. They might have copyright in a nickname if they were first to use it. Cromwell might not be copyright but 'Old Noll' might. If Clark can arrange Chancery visit they'll have the other. Loveday is in Scarborough & has been very ill. Telegraph him about Noels'. Love to Stoker & his Florence. |

Typewritten transcript. Irving was staying at the Victoria Hotel in Bamburgh when the newly married H.B. and Dorothea Irving came to a family cottage there. This may concern copyright for 'Madame Sans GĂȘne'. An incomplete typewritten transcript is in THM/37/1/36.

A cheery letter from Lowne and they will meet during the few days Toole is in London. Irving will be back about 20th. He says Toole will be in Scarborough on 31st and wishes it longer but it will be better playing the old things instead of new ones. [Joseph] Parkinson was there for a few days and went driving and fishing. The young bride and groom are there now and are very happy. Their good opinion of her is confirmed. He will try to get to North Berwick for a week to finish off work. The enclosed letter came the day before, but there is nothing to be done. After the enclosed external para. he does not wonder at the flight of Lowne. Greetings to Billington. (Postscript:) Ellen [Terry] is in Winchelsea, rested and her eyes much better. |

'Madame Sans GĂȘne.' They obtained Mr Cozens Hardy's opinion the day before and sent a copy of case and opinion to Bram Stoker with another to Irving. If he has anything to add to the case they will be glad to submit it. They can show Stoker the report of Dicks v. Yates and have a full shorthand report of the judgement. They think Mr Cozens Hardy has perhaps not given sufficient weight to the production & popularity of the play in Paris, the consequent knowledge of it in England, and the anticipation of it here. The case submitted to him may have been a little weak in this respect. The title has been registered in England as Irving wished. |

See Letter 4120. The barrister's opinion was presumably unfavourable and no record of a suit over rights in the play, possibly against George Edwardes, has so far been found. |
