Gilbert was commissioned to make a medieval Bell for presentation to Irving on the 25th anniversary of 'The Bells' on 25th November 1896. It is clear it was not completed, so only a sketch or model can have been presented on the anniversary. See Letters 8050-53. |

Please let the bearer take away the model. The next day he can work at it and he feels in the mood. He has never experienced such moments as those the last night. Irving's acting completely carried him away; then his manner, kindness and power shone out, half dazing Gilbert. No wonder Irving has such men as Stoker and Loveday beside him and Gilbert wishes for such devotion and might try to deserve it more. |

He does not know as much of this affair as Scott - & his impressions were not received from Stoker. He kept it from Irving and from everybody. Everybody in the theatre was in it from the highest to the lowest. This list is going to the papers the next day - Scott may care to see it. His account of the last night was everything it could be. They are all talking of it there. |
