He is sure the growth of suburban theatres will increase the number of playgoers, and widen local rational amusements. So many social considerations are involved that it is difficult to assess the effect on the West End, but he does not think the Strand will be deserted at night. He is sure they will continue to make a little money from the suburban playgoer. |

If Irving wants his wife to play with him entirely he can arrange for someone to play her part in 'Delicate Ground'. He hopes Irving is better. |

Irving's long note on the letter seems to indicate that Playfair should use his understudy. Lena Ashwell played Edward V in 'Richard III' which had been cancelled after Irving's injury until 27th February. In the meantime she appeared in 'Delicate Ground'. Later Joan Burnett played some performances of the latter. A letter from Playfair to Stoker on 30th March says Lena Ashwell lost money by playing Lady Anne (as understudy?) so she could not appear in 'Delicate Ground'. See Letters 5274 & 6871. |
