Content Summary: He has been told Irving seeks a new play and offers one in which he has no interest: 'The Pretenders' in 5 acts by Ibsen. An unattractive name but an early work by a great poet with stage sense. He lists the advantages of the play suggesting Nicholas or Earl Skule as parts for Irving. He is not writing as an Ibsenite. There is a good translation in the Walter Scott edition. However different their views they are both interested in the drama. Irving has the power to present a great dramatic work of high literary merit.

Content Summary: Tell Irving they are delighted to welcome him to the Chapter House for his reading on Monday 31st May. The building will have been opened by the Prince of Wales on 29th and this will add distinction to the reading. The building seats about 800 and this will be its first use. They are putting in the platform used by the King's School for annual recitations. When Squire Bancroft read in the Music Hall they charged 5/- for the best seats, raising £50. He is worried about 1 guinea tickets and special trains from London. Announcements should say reading ends with martyrdom of Becket. He cannot estimate the local audience. Once more thanks to them both. (Postcript:) He will be at the Athenaeum 11-12 May if either would like to see him.
