He has thought about that 'Monte Christo' subject with Hichens, and although difficult think it could be adapted to contemporary London life. But they have another idea. He understands the play must be of modern life and the central character a man of mysterious power. The 'Monte Christo' theme of the power of wealth is old fashioned and played out. Why not be up to date and play with the Man of Science exercising cold-blooded power like a vivisector over a woman patient. They have sketched the first half of such a play but cannot proceed until they know if this attracts Irving. Is he free on Sunday 6th or 13th June when he could come down to discuss this with them. |
