Thanks for the autographed copy of 'Peter the Great' which he wishes he could have seen the night before. He criticises the play as a reader from the disjointed dialogue of its beginning, discussing the characters and its development to the powerful and tragic last act. It must have been effective at the Lyceum and he is sure he will hear the next day of an enthusiatic reception. Congratulations on an unique event in Irving's professional life. |

'Peter the Great' was by Irving's son Laurence, but it was a comparative failure in production. |

He does not know what to say about his father's ( ?) letter. He will always keep it. The night before last was indeed a splendid night. He remarks on Pinero's kind letter and praise. He was coming to see the play again that night. He signs himself as affectionate and grateful. |

The remark he made about the play on Saturday night seemed to astonish Irving. A member of the audience may have a valid opinion for the stage manager saturated in detail. He congratulates Irving on producing a play by his son. The conception of the final passages is great and an interesting psychological study, refreshingly novel and historically accurate. However he criticises the first act as contributing little to the play and being almost unintelligible because of the excessive carousing in the scene. This fails to awaken the interest until the second act and appearance of Alexis. He speaks as one who had read nothing beforehand. He hopes that 'Peter' will have a long run and be appreciated as a characterisation. |

Irving was always kind during her stays in London, and she asks a favour. She leaves the theatre in January and gives a farewell performance in February. Would he come and play on their great stage, where they would acclaim him. |

In French, addressed to "Cher grande Artiste". The reply on 7/1/98 was clearly a refusal. Mlle Reichenberg is recorded as playing in London in 1891 & 1893. |
