Recipient: Stoker, Bram (Abraham) >>
Address: -
Date: 1898, Feb., 5
Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: He denies to Stoker and Irving that he was responsible for the published paragraphs regarding the offer of employment. He had not mentioned that Irving had asked him to play Tolstoi, and certainly not that the part was Alexis - a departure from professional ethics. He would not have mentioned it, but cuttings showed they had to issue a correction.
Published: -
Notes: With 4 photographs of McLeay and cuttings about him which may have belonged in Letter 5230. The reply note indicates the McLeay was told that the misstatement was definitely not attributed to him. William Mackintosh played Tolstoi in 'Peter the Great' and Alexis was played by Robert Taber.

Author: Vezin, Hermann >>
Address: 10, Lancaster Place, Strand, WC.
Recipient: Irving, Sir Henry >>
Address: -
Date: 1898, Feb., 5
Document Type: Letter (3 p.)
Content Summary: Many years before Phelps told Vezin that Bulwer Lytton had made a very good translation of Oedipus Tyrannus but could not produce it because of theme of incest. The BP [British Public] has got over that now. A few years ago Vezin wrote to Lady Lytton , Bulwer Lytton's daughter-in-law asking if play still existed but it has not turned up. If Irving applied it might be found and be worth his while. The Theatre Francais did it at Drury Lane a few years before and Cambridge undergraduates in the original Greek. He had a great treat at the Lyceum on Friday night.

Notes: 'Oedipus' not listed by Nicoll. Vezin probably saw 'Peter the Great'.
