Mr [---st] has taken matters in hand and will call to explain matters. Sir Edward Lawson and Sir Arthur Sullivan have offered to help and form a representative committee. It is very urgent.

Date: 1898, Feb., 12
Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: He thanks Irving for his (forwarded) telegram. He is progressing but cannot attend the next day's dinner. At the last managerial meeting Irving said he intended to speak lightly if not facetiously of the [Clement] Scott affair to the effect that it had not done much harm. He hopes Irving has reconsidered this and without showing animus will refer to it seriously. The Actors' Association is waiting for news of their attitude, particularly Irving's. Neither the Association nor he is lukewarm. The more he thinks of the slur on the reputation of hundreds of women and girls the more he thinks they cannot let the matter drop. Scott must retract or be ostracised. He sends a temperate article from the 'San Francisco Argonaut' which suggests that if they do nothing they are more concerned about a bad review than a consideration of dignity.

Notes: With a typewritten copy of the article from the 'San Francisco Argonaut'. Scott had written an injudicious article attacking the morals of actresses.
