Scott thanks his old friend for his loyal and affectionate championship in a dark hour for him and his wife. He did an idiotic thing but was dragged into it when he was sick and in pain. That is no excuse but it may save some punishment. He has suffered enough in the last five weeks. He refers to their first meeting at the War Office and the dear old Charles Mathews days. He wishes the Wyndham circle were as generous as Hare and Irving, which he will not forget. Do not answer. He cannot bear it and is very down. God bless Irving. |

With stamped envelope. Shaw had been struck off the list of dramatic critics. Shaw's draft reply is written on pp.3-4 of the letter. He attacks London theatres and is resigning as critic of 'The Saturday Review'. He knows some details of the play, but refers to his troubled relationship with Irving. Finally he composes a bland acceptance. A note on the envelope instructs a secretary to copy the reply within. |
