Her address is 30 [Stupec?] Place, Queen's Gate, S.W. it would be very good for her if Irving could further her hopes. Recipient: Irving, Sir Henry >>
Address: -
Date: 1898, May, 20
Document Type: Letter (7 p.)
Content Summary: At one time at [George?] Alexander's House Burnand and Irving spoke about 'Sappho'. Burnand is interested in turning it into a play, which might not suit Irving, but would Ellen Terry. His play would stress the maternal aspect. Would Irving read it, twice, in clear typescript and give advice? He hopes to have the Cardinal to lunch there in the next three weeks and Irving must be free. He hopes his plan for the Cardinal alone, with some Punch contributors as guests, will succeed.

Notes: Alphonse Daudet's novel 'Sapho' was published in English in 1886 and an opera was based on it in 1898. Nothing seems to have come of Burnand's idea for a play. It was in May 1898 that Cardinal Vaughan invited Irving to lecture on 'Macbeth' at his house, and possibly they met through Burnand.

Content Summary: He would like her to play in the 'Lyons Mail' and 'Louis XI' which they will be doing before the end of the season, and he wants her with them to the end. On Saturday week they play 'The Bells' at night so that Miss Terry will be free for the matinee. He wishes Dorothea could have appeared in a lot of matinees following her beautiful performance, but between themselves - the play does not take and they must make the best of an unfortunate business. (Postscript:) She will find the part in the 'Lyons Mail' is more important than it seems to read.
Published: L. Irving, Precarious Crust, p.40 (without postscript)
