Just off to Bristol and wishes he could say goodbye. Perhaps Toole will come somewhere where they can have some time together. He will be working on 'Richard [II]' the whole time preparing for January. It promises well. The last weeks have been good and would have been better except for the terrible heat which has stricken London. He hopes Arlton will write with news of Toole. He was delighted to be with him for a few days in Margate and Stoker brought back many messages. Stoker said Toole had had a sympathetic letter from Rosebery, also how many friends wish him well and strong again. Affectionate and loving wishes. |

That was splendidly carried out and he will always be grateful to Mr Paget(?). But for this matter he would have remained unnoticed by the press ... He knows these things should be regarded with contempt, but it is unwise to pooh pooh everything. In Birmingham some expressed satisfaction that many things had been effortlessly quashed in the interview. Their Birmingham week beats the record and he thinks Edinburgh will support them. He has just left a vast crowd at the station, and on the Sabbath too - for they are just in. |
