Author: Irving, Sir Henry >>
Address: The Queen's Hotel Manchester Limited
Recipient: Salaman, Malcolm Charles >>
Address: 24 Sutherland Avenue, W, London
Date: [1899], Oct., 2
Document Type: Letter (3 p.)
Content Summary: Irving has read through Salaman's proof which over values his deserts. He asks him to amend one sentence. Irving has never held that members of his profession are "not morally impeccable", merely resented attacks on his calling which have classed all actresses together. If C.S.'s [Clement Scott's] remarks were applied to law, medicine and the Church an equal injustice would be done for there are fine characters in each of these callings. This has just come as he is leaving for the theatre so Salaman must excuse rather rough notes.

Notes: With envelope bearing Lyceum theatre address, directed in another hand. In this file is also preserved an envelope addressed to Salaman at 4 Colville Gardens, W on 19th October 1905 containing two tickets for Irving's funeral in Westminster Abbey on 20th October.

Content Summary: Before telling own experience and predicting impossibilities perhaps well to wish success to those following in Irving's footsteps. Is sure Salaman will understand he would be sorry to throw damper on others' work, and cannot be too careful.
