Recipient: Irving, Sir Henry >>
Address: -
Date: [1901?]
Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: She has had a cable from her manager Charles Ellis asking if Irving would lend him the costumes for 'Romeo & Juliet'. What would this cost? On her own part would Irving lend her his scenery for 'Romeo & Juliet', 'Faust' and 'Lucia' [Ravenswood]? She is likely to go to Australia the next year and wishes to do everything artistically and hopes Irving might help. If not can he advise her where to have them done - this is purely a business matter. She is sorry not to have seen him that year. (Postscript:) If Irving is not in town, she is going abroad on Sunday and asks for the reply to go to: Villa Carlotta, Stresa, Lago Maggiore, Italy.
Published: -
Notes: The postscript is on a separate small sheet of paper. Melba returned to Australia in 1902, but if the date is 1901 she cannot have heard of the burning of Irving's scenery and costumes in February 1898. (She was usually in London in the summer months.) A note at head to Irving from Louis Austin reads: "She asks you to advise her where to go for dresses" which is only partly correct.
