He is in a poor way there, so Irving must wonder why he has not called to congratulate him on his return from abroad. Since Nov. 1899 he has not been out and has dropped out of the world. The lease of his flat expires at Michaelmas and he cannot afford the raised rent. He will miss his overhead neighbour with whom he had a link in the Indian Mutiny. Latterly he could not climb the stairs and was ailing in January. They will meet in the next world. He can creep about a bit now. |

| Content Summary: |
The colleagues with whom he has consulted have agreed unanimously to close their theatres on the two nights suggested. They did not have a general meeting of theatre managers as they passed the individual motion which is all that was possible. Irving thinks this is what Ellis wished as each manager received a similar letter. They were all anxious to adopt any suggestion acceptable to His Majesty the King. (Postcript:) 22nd April - he closed the Lyceum Theatre on the Jubilees of 1887 & 1897. |
