Address: Lord Chamberlain's Office, St. James's Palace, SW
Recipient: Irving, Sir Henry >>
Address: -
Date: 1902, May, 6
Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: He submitted Irving's letter of 2nd May to the King who thinks proposal excellent and approves. Ellis, however, cannot tell which day in week following the Coronation would be most convenient. Suggests Irving contacts Lord George Hamilton at the India Office and Mr Chamberlain at the Colonial Office as they can give numbers and answer queries. Communicate with Mr Oliver Williams(?) of the Colonial Troops Entertainment Committee.

Notes: Headed 'Private'. The Coronation was postponed because of the King's illness, but Irving entertained rulers and personnel from the Empire (after 'Waterloo' and 'The Bells' performance) on 3rd July on stage at the Lyceum.

Notes: Rough pencil note, partly illegible on upside down Lyceum paper. It seems in part to be Irving's draft of the letter written by Stoker to Ellen Terry on Irving's behalf (Ellen Terry Archive ET-Z1,471; BL Loan MS 125/30/2) See Letter 7898.

Date: 1902, May, 16
Document Type: Letter (3 p.)
Content Summary: Irving asks him to write distinctly. Her regular salary, £85 per week, certainly begins on 31st May. The plan of the Spring tour is to visit smaller towns for short terms, perhaps halving the profits. With also a share of profits to go to the Lyceum Company, would she care to come at £100 per week. If so it would be firstly a provincial tour for 12 weeks starting in Birmingham on 22nd September, she playing twice a week at £100. Next a provincial tour of 9 or 10 weeks commencing about 26th January, playing her usual repertoire and receiving £100 for six or less performances. Will she let them know as soon as possible as they are waiting for her decision. He hopes she is benefiting from a good rest.

Notes: Stoker was asked to be explicit and businesslike; his handwriting can be as difficult to read as Irving's. A draft of part of this letter is Letter 6305. Ellen Terry went on the Autumn tour, as in London playing only Portia and Queen Katharine, but did not go on the Spring tour in 1903.
