Content Summary: Irving is a kind friend to agree to read. Will he look over what Mr Ainger says. Would the 4th Act he mentions of 'Much Ado' be more trouble - Benedick than Bassanio? She would like to act Beatrice to his Benedick, but she supposes times and occasions will never serve. After nearly a month's silence the Trustees of the Theatrical Fund have written that they can get no theatre for a performance in aid of their funds. She is sorry for the poor members who suffer a reduction. What a mess actors make of business. She compares the present unfavourably with Garrick, Kemble, etc. Please send an early decision as she will have to seek support. Mr Ainger will do Leonato and a clerical friend the Friar. (Postscript:) The Balcony scene stands in any case.

Date: [1879?], June, 25
Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: She gave an introductory card to Mr W. Stuart about whom she spoke to Irving at Alma Tadema's the previous Monday and he will call. He came to London hoping to be an actor, and is a busy correspondent for the American newspapers, warmly recommended to her by American friends. Will Irving sign a photograph for her - she sends hers and the one of him she likes best. She fears Mr Pulitzer was the cause of the misunderstanding about the Millbank Prison. She and her husband would be happy to join Irving's excursion but disliked Pulitzer's invitation. She is free the next week except Wednesday and Tuesday her reception day.

Notes: Modjeska first saw Irving in 'Vanderdecken' in 1878, but the chronology of her visits to London is not clear, and almost all her letters are undated. Stuart has been identified as Clinton Stuart, an actor and playwright.
