Content Summary: He refuses an invitation to stay as social obligations make it necessary for him to stay in a hotel, but will visit as much as he can. He expects to arrive at about 6 o'clock on Tuesday. Stoker will be pleased to see that he does Richelieu on Saturday, but what will others think of this, and of Louis the following Monday. 'Louis [XI]' is a success [in Liverpool] and the season very popular. Love to his wife.

Content Summary: Went to see Irving play last night at the Alexandra, Liverpool. Roomy, convenient but dirty place. Play was 'Louis XI' - a repulsive character. Could only get a seat on back bench in first balcony as crowded houses are the norm when 'the great I' appears. Irving did not impress him; he is frenzied and descends to farceur's tricks. Discusses the peculiarities of Irving's voice in detail. Shuts down every light on stage except closely focused calcium which shines solely on his face and head. The entirety of the drama disappears and a conjurer - like exhibition of a sphinx's head takes its place. Will not give further opinion until he sees Irving again.

Notes: Written to Daly's brother. Despite unfavourable view Daly offered Irving a 3 month engagement at his theatre in New York with half the gross receipts and a guarantee of $500 a performance. Ellen Terry was included in the offer. Irving refused.

The two Tooles's (?) are very happy together - and a nice little music party in the evening, and all know each other well. They think of Irving performing every night.
