Date: 1879, [Nov.], [2?]
Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: A very enthusiastic letter praising Irving's Shylock and Ellen Terry's Portia who was joyous and yet noble and surpassed herself except in the speech to Bassanio. It was too late to shake hands with Irving and embrace Portia but they will soon come again and come round to greet them. P.S. Thanks for the Box, delicious in its seclusion.

Address: -
Date: 1879, Nov., 2
Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: Thanks Irving for previous night -never was there such beauty of scenery and costume. He thinks he understands Irving's Shylock - the last scene very fine but suggests more intensity and tenderness in earlier parts. More light and shade but apologises for criticising a first night. Portia charming as before. Her increased happiness in life seems to show in the gaiety and buoyancy of her acting. Barnes disappoints him - capital in 'The Iron Chest' but too heavy as Bassanio. He commends Gratiano and Lorenzo.
