Content Summary: He tells of great trouble. His son Frank has been suffering greatly. Sir James Paget was consulting and he has had to undergo another terrible operation for the removal of his leg. It had to be done to save his life. He prays it may, but fears the shock too much for his system. Toole is nearly broken hearted and writes this in bed. He fears the worst. Frank is Toole's life and if this is fatal he will retire. He knows he has all Irving's sympathy.

Content Summary: Detailed views on 'The Merchant of Venice' about Irving's interpretation and direction. Irving has not yet as much love for Shakespeare as for his art. Strong criticism of Ellen Terry's Portia. She should be grander and in the Bassanio scene she should keep her eyes down and stand at least half a dozen yards away from him. Ruskin also, as a painter, protests against the removal of Arragon [sic]. It is like pulling a leaf from a trefoil.
