He tells of great trouble. His son Frank has been suffering greatly. Sir James Paget was consulting and he has had to undergo another terrible operation for the removal of his leg. It had to be done to save his life. He prays it may, but fears the shock too much for his system. Toole is nearly broken hearted and writes this in bed. He fears the worst. Frank is Toole's life and if this is fatal he will retire. He knows he has all Irving's sympathy. |

Detailed views on 'The Merchant of Venice' about Irving's interpretation and direction. Irving has not yet as much love for Shakespeare as for his art. Strong criticism of Ellen Terry's Portia. She should be grander and in the Bassanio scene she should keep her eyes down and stand at least half a dozen yards away from him. Ruskin also, as a painter, protests against the removal of Arragon [sic]. It is like pulling a leaf from a trefoil. |

He wants to arrange a favourable London debut for Mrs Bernard Beere and is taking the Haymarket on February 5th & 12th to play [The Love Chase?] and 'The School for Scandal'. He asks Irving to release Old Chips [William Henry Chippendale] for the matinees to play Sir William Fondlove and Sir Peter Teazle as they have played together in the provinces, and to let him approach Forrester to play Joseph Surface. Congratulations on Irving's successful start. |

Irving refused, saying it was not company policy and he needed the actors' attention. This rule was relaxed later. |

Coming to see ' the old play' on Wednesday. His wife has had a miscarriage. Would Irving consider reviving Albery's 'The Jesuit' for his benefit. Buckstone always did something for his benefit. Irving Albery (his son) is 'a splendid little buck'- his first toy was a little bunch of bells! |
