Date: [1880], [Feb.], [14]
Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: A stranger but offers congratulations on 100th night of 'The Merchant of Venice'. He was in town for the 2nd performance and waited at the pit door for 2 hours in a terrible crush with his Shakespeare in his hand. He was in second row and has never been so rewarded. The Lyceum is the only theatre he has been to since ordination, and he saw 'The Bells' and 'Hamlet'. Irving has shaped his life. He recalls an eulogy by Bishop Lightfoot of Durham that whoever encourages what is fine and healthy is the benefactor of his country and the most effective preacher of Christ. He believes Irving has fulfilled that task.
