He thinks that the outlay necessary for production would be some thousands of pounds which might be a loss if the play did not succeed, so to invest a large sum in addition to outright purchase would be a great risk. Irving prefers to buy rights of performance for 5 years with a royalty of £5 per performance, or he would pay £500 for 5 years with an option of renewal for 5 years on payment of £500 or a similar sum, or would buy outright for £700.

Wills is thinking of a Timon of Athens character set in Queen Anne's time. He wishes he could avoid potboilers but he has money problems. In the autumn he has plays at the Haymarket, St James & the Court, also 2 plays in the provinces. Will Irving answer. He used to be a charming correspondent when Wills was working on 'Rienzi' but suddenly dried up!
