His friends rejoiced when the telegram said Irving had a cold and could not come.Train services had been bad on Monday and are intermittent on Sundays. If Irving were late he might find the town shown by the Gordons and Mr Bartlett uninteresting. She hopes he can come the next Sunday and will send details of trains. She is pleased he is prospering. She had such a night on Friday and must describe things in the House he never saw. She is not prospering but has previous things which cannot be taken. |

A note in Irving's hand at the head of the letter reads 'I wonder what you do want. "I like to wonder"!!!' The Baroness was encountering opposition to her engagement to William Ashmead Bartlett. See also Letter No.863 where an insert indicates a personal request she wishes to make. |

After 21 grapes she ends with the Sherry Wines! She longs to hear what Irving has decided. She is there on business, to see her sister Susan and to take the dear Gordons to the Corsicans [Corsican Brothers]. She will be busy all day and will dine early but could Irving lunch with them the next day, Thursday at 3 for they return later to St Leonards. (Postscript) She would probably be home by 5.30 that day. |
