Date: 1873, April, 20
Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: He deplores Irving's treatment by some of the Garrick Club Committee. He had not known Irving was proposed until after the theatre the previous night and Frith felt the election was secure. That morning Douglas Straight told him what had happened and he went to Walter Arnold to hear the facts and to find the remedy. He recounted this talk to Mrs Bateman and the ladies. He begs Irving to maintain a dignified silence until it is set right. Irving may take some consolation from the glorious reception he received the last night, with the audience at one in acknowledgement.

Notes: Irving was blackballed when first proposed as a member of the Garrick Club, but was elected in November. April 19th was the first night of 'Eugene Aram' at the Lyceum.

Date: [1873], [April], [21] Monday
Document Type: Letter
Content Summary: Although almost a stranger, he is angry and amazed that Irving has been blackballed by the Garrick. As he writes members are saying it is a disgrace to the Club. Sandys thinks the Committee contemptible and urges Irving to allow himself to be put up again. He will certainly be elected; then he can remain a member or resign with the contempt the Club deserves.
Published: L. Irving, p.233.
Notes: Irving's reply is Letter 5533. He was elected a member in November.

Author: Taylor, Sir Charles >>
Address: 28 Park Crescent, Portland Place, NW
Recipient: Irving, Sir Henry >>
Address: -
Date: 1873, April, 21
Document Type: Letter (4 p.)
Content Summary: He regrets and was astonished at the result of Irving's candidature at the Garrick Club the previous Saturday. As Trustee and Chairman his name should have weight and he hopes Irving will allow him to propose him again as soon as the rules permit. He does not think Frith will be offended and Walter Arnold, nearly the oldest member, will be pleased to second him. As a man of nearly 60 who has seen much of Clubs he can say rejection only means somebody dislikes a candidate. He will be really sorry (and thinks he will be ill advised) if Irving refuses his offer.
Published: L. Irving, p.232
Notes: Irving was blackballed on 19th April. He had been proposed by Frith and seconded by Toole. The book was signed by Bancroft, Hall, Hollingshead and Arnold. A.W. Arnold was present, but Trollope and Millais were absent. In November Irving was elected, proposed by Taylor and seconded by Arnold.
